Mushroom

20210902_123912.jpg

Once we were told about the mushroom project I immediately knew My first mushroom would be similar to a porcini mushroom. They’re short with a pretty wide base and a large brown cap. I really like the way these mushrooms look and I figured it wouldn’t be too hard to make so I decided to start there. My first mushroom was the most experimental. It took me a while to figure out how to make the cardboard do what I wanted it to. I tried tearing the...

Will cotton is an artist known for using sweets and candy in his paintings. In the video we watched Cotton says he likes to use candy because it’s an item whose only purpose is pleasure. This simple fact alone begins to create a connection between Cotton's candy crowns and our cakes. I think that the process of creating these projects actually mirror each other. Cotton uses actual candy to create things not usually associated with candy, like crowns, and we made cakes using things that aren't even edible.

Our final sculpture has a sun and moon theme. Each layer has a different element (vines, clouds, stars) and to me this cake shows the connection of elements.

My partner and I both had a lot of ideas for this project so narrowing it down was a bit...

Containers for Memory

This piece turned out almost exactly how I imagined. The rough edges create an older, rundown feel and I think the little bits of newspaper spilling the edge shows the holes and messiness of fake and toxic news. The only major mistake would have to be the shininess of the newspaper. I really wanted to uphold the look of something worn out but the shinnies messed this up. With that being said I think new meaning can be found in the shiny newspaper. I used newspaper to represent all platforms of news, and this includes social media. The rundown structure of the bowl keeps the idea of the older platforms, like the paper, plus the shiny paper can represent the new, such as social media. I think one of the strongest parts of this Piece is the emphasis and focal point. The white pieces set a...

Mid Term Reflection

This course is about what I expected. I was prepared to write reflections/critiques as well as work with different materials. With this being said I don’t think I expected the pace of everything. After our first project I realized just how fast paced everything was and began to understand just how important spending time outside of class working on projects is.

I'm looking forward to the longer project. The first half of this semester focused on doing medium length projects back to back to allow us to get used to 3D art and working with different materials. The second half seems like it will focus more on a longer project and the process of curating and developing ideas for that project.

This course has challenged me to learn how to...

Unwitting Collaborator

For this assignment we were told to take a book and alter it in some way. In other words, we were told to form a collaboration with an unwitting author. We created an artwork with both our and the authors name attached yet the author has no idea he/she/they participated.

For my piece I decided to completely ignore the contents of the book and simply use the book as a regular sketchbook. My piece is simply art for the sake of art, beautiful because it can be, and no deeper meaning.

Going into this piece I set a rule, “Everytime the circles cross the pattern must change”. I wanted to use this piece as an experiment. I wanted to use techniques that I usually run away from, like patterns and overlapping. I worked very spontaneously...
