I see art as a platform to speak for the unheard voices. We live in a material world and so I use that to my advantage, shining a spotlight on the messages I see as important by creating a physical representation. My goal as an artist is to create art that uses every detail to convey the feelings and emotions of others.

Inescapable (above image) is a collection of photos inspired by the deaths triggering the BLM movement in 2020. It is a piece that screams out and shows the stress and pain felt by many African Americans. At times the news feels inescapable, and many of us  live in constant fear of seeing one of our loved ones on the news next or being next ourselves .

When I create, on top of creating narrative through detail, there is also the challenge of keeping the composition balanced while adding as much meaningful detail as needed. In inescapable the old TV is a connection between present and past but it is also used as a cropping tool creating a boxed in feeling. The dark face creates a gloomy feel but it also makes the viewer not focus so much on who is in the photo but the tone of the photo and it allows the viewer to easily self insert.

When I create a narrative scene I start with the question of “what do I want to say” and then begin the process of figuring out how to speak without words. Every detail in each piece I create is meticulously planned because I want to waste no space in composition as these voices deserve to take up space and be heard.
