Line & Shape - Balance & Movement

Sensory: Sound

Workshop Is a piece I created after being in the woodshop in Schichtl. While I was in the woodshop there were many sounds happening from the low rumbling of the fan, to the screeching of the wood being cut, to the grinding of the sanders. I chose to use this specific sound because it was so complex and it seemed like it would be really fun to try and put such a large and chaotic  sound on paper. I believe the strong parts of this piece are the bold, dark lines I was able to make. I chose to make these lines this dark to show how the sound of the wood being cut stands out from the sound of the fan and sander. The weaker part of this piece is also the lines, or more specifically the lack there of. If I were to do this piece again I would add more lines and possibly even overlap them to help better represent the sounds of the woodshop.

Space, Linear Perspective, Scale, Proportion

How do artists create depth and space in a drawing/painting? There are many way to answer this question, one of them being Scale. Artists can draw objects in scale to make them seem more realistic and to make them seem to be on the same level (one isn't farther back that another). In the images attached above you can see an in scale drawing. I kept the taboret and computer in scale with each other to give the viewer a realistic view of what I was seeing at the time of drawing. Artists can also draw things out of scale. Drawing something out of scale can allow the artist to draw the viewers attention where they want. Drawing something out of scale also helps highlight what the artists deems most important and causes the viewer to think about what message the artist wants to get across. In the images attached above you can see a out of scale drawing of a taboret and a pencil. By making the pencil the same size as if not bigger than the taboret I've created a out of scale drawing and forced you the viewer to not only look at, but look for the meaning of the pencil.

Pattern, Variety, Color, Emphasis, & Focal Point

For this assignment we were instructed to create a symbol that represents us. Not something we like, but something that embodies us or a part of us. For me this is a cloud. When most people think of clouds I think they think of something that's soft and goes with the wind but this is only one part of it. Clouds are unpredictable, they take on many different shapes, they can hide things, and when they bottle up too much it all comes crashing down. I am a cloud. Everyday you see new cloud and everyday you see a new me and I don't think that's a bad thing.

My first sketch of the tee-shirt was a very simple drawing to get an idea of how to draw the clouds and how I wanted to place them. The second sketch introduced a lot more shading, I played with the contrast of dark & light and I made the clouds bigger to fill up a little more space. In my third sketch I kept the same base of the second drawing but I did some overlapping and used color in the clouds to emphasize on the idea of different emotions striking at different times.

For the forth and final sketch I gave the design a focal point by again playing with the contrast of light and dark. In this design there is one single spot that was left white. This cloud is isolated, not by it's placement but by it's lack of color and it becomes the focal point. For the other clouds in the design I removed the grey shading used in the pervious sketches and only used different shades and tints of their respective colors. Each color represents a different emotion, such as anger or joy, and removing the grey shading allowed those colors to shine through like those emotions do. The addition of the untainted, white cloud represents a neutral or calm feeling. This is the feeling that I try to keep as my core therefore it was made the focal point.

Color & Emphasis (Focal Point)

Mini Collecting Project

For this assignment I decided to use colored ribbons to represent my day. The day we recorded data I wrote down that I was feeling very calm and I wanted to represent this in my drawing so I chose ribbons to give that calm flowing feel.  I took the recorded data and split it into six general categories and assigned each category a color (color holds no other meaning). The amount of folds in each ribbon represents the amount of times I did what every the category said ( on my phone, listening to music, etc)and all the ribbons touch and tangle together because all of these things made up my day and I didn't want to separate them.

This piece has a lot of shading. The shading helps the piece not be so flat by adding depth and movement. I did a lot of overlapping in this piece to make it more interesting and I also didn't create a focal point but instead created an overall balance.

I learned a lot about myself as a person and as an artists while making this piece. Firstly I learned that my brain never stops, I'm constantly thinking about random thoughts, things I need to do, and so much more. I also realized that I think too much when making decisions about my art. It took me so long to draw all of my ribbons because I was worried I would put them in the wrong place. I eventually was able to stop thinking about it so much and allow myself to place them randomly like I wanted them to be.

Collection Catalogue

20210512_195154.jpg

What do you collect?
I collect photos of things in nature I find beautiful.

How long have you been collecting?
I’ve always taken pictures of things that interest me, but before this assignment I've never had a formal collection. I guess I've been collecting pictures since I got my camera (about 2 years ago), but I only started collecting with intention a month or two ago.

Why do you find this item interesting/why do you collect it?
I never look to take a picture. If I walked around looking for beautiful things to take pictures of I'd never stop so I only take pictures when things catch my eye. Interesting colors, textures, scenery, all of that. Pictures capture moments, and when the world creates something beautiful you never know how long it’ll last or if it will happen again so I chose to capture those moments.

Is the collection complete? If not, what is it missing or is it an endless collection?
This is an endless collection. As long as the world creates beautiful things i’ll take pictures of them.
